Just Announced: Industry Firsts for Streaming Video Subscribers

January 28, 2016

Alexandria, VA – Alexander Street today announced the addition of two groundbreaking benefits to its flagship video collection, Academic Video Online: Premium: perpetual rights and a media uploading and hosting service.

Academic Video Online: Premium is the industry-leading streaming video subscription that includes more than 47,000 titles, half of which are available nowhere else. With the new “AVON-to-Own” feature, subscribing libraries will receive perpetual rights to videos they select at the end of each annual term. Libraries with subscriptions beginning January 1, 2016 are eligible. The number of videos per year is commensurate with the amount of the subscription, and libraries can utilize an entire year of usage data to support their selections. The longer a library subscribes the more titles it can keep.

Subscribing libraries will also receive the Video Commons media uploading and hosting service at no charge. Libraries can post an unlimited amount of locally-produced content, as well as licensed content, and make it visible to individual faculty members, the entire institution, or to anyone in the world. Librarians set permissions at the title level and can permanently link content to their catalogs.

“Video is becoming an increasingly essential part of research and learning across the academy,” said Stephen Rhind-Tutt, president of Alexander Street. “These improvements make locally produced video much easier to share and allow libraries to keep titles that have proven value for the long term.”

Academic Video Online: Premium includes content from over 1,500 leading distributors, producers, and filmmakers, such as 60 Minutes/CBS, Microtraining Associates, Filmakers Library, Insight Media, BBC, Bloomberg, and more. Every kind of video with curricular relevance is available, including documentaries, interviews, performances, news programs and newsreels, field recordings, commercials, and raw footage. Patrons will find thousands of award-winning films, including Academy®, Emmy®, and Peabody® winners. Academic institutions will find the most frequently used films for classroom instruction, plus newly released films and previously unavailable archival material.

In addition, the collection offers state-of-the-art search tools, scrolling transcripts, COUNTER Release 4 usage statistics, a customizable website for media hosting, and the support of a dedicated Account Manager. Current subscribers to any Alexander Street video collection upgrading to Academic Video Online: Premium can sign up to use the Video Commons immediately.
