For Immediate Release

Classical Scores Library
now live!

Alexander Street is pleased to announce the first release of our highly anticipated Classical Scores Library. This initial release includes 800 in-copyright scores from Boosey and Hawkes and selected material from the University Music Editions (UME) microfilm series. Forty-nine composers' works are included in this release, including notable 20th-century composers such as Aaron Copland, Benjamin Britten, Igor Stravinsky, Steve Reich, and Ned Rorem.

Further releases will include substantial additional Boosey and Hawkes material, the entire catalog of UME, manuscript material from the Barry S. Brook Center for Music Research, and many new editions from other in-copyright publishers. At completion, the collection will contain 400,000 pages of classical scores from both in-copyright and public domain editions, representing the output of the major composers as well as many lesser known works.

The database has been indexed to enable users to search on musically relevant fields, such as, composer, work/opus number, key, genre, instrument, and time period, as well as score-specific fields such as, score type, duration, presence of non-standard clefs or figured bass, editor, arranger, and publisher. This detailed indexing allows users to search, analyze, and research scores in a simple but powerful manner.

Classical Scores Library also provides a unique combination of valuable additional features:

  • No additional software required: unlike some other services, the scores in Classical Scores Library are available in the universally-viewable pdf format
  • Printing enabled: users can print any score in the collection
  • Movement-level navigation: users can jump directly into a score at the movement level, rather than navigating through large scores to find specific information
  • Integration with Classical Music Library: subscribers to both services will see links in Classical Scores Library, so they can listen to the work while following along with the score
