Today, Alexander Street Press, the publisher of online
music listening and reference databases including Classical Music Library,
Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries, and African American
Song, acquired University Music Editions (UME), a major publisher
of music titles in microform, founded by Christopher Pavlakis.
As part of the agreement, Alexander Street acquires the rights
for more than 40 years of UME publications, including such gems
as The National Tune Index, The Bibliography of American Hymnals,
The Dictionary of American Hymnology, as well as the complete
published works of major composers.
“For some 40 years, Christopher Pavlakis and his colleagues
at University Music Editions painstakingly compiled complete
copies of music scores, journals, and reference works. His attention
to detail and insistence on quality make UME’s publications
particularly valuable. It’s a privilege to be continuing
his work in electronic form,” said Tim Lloyd, Chief Operating
Officer at Alexander Street.
Starting in 2007, Alexander Street expects
to publish facsimile versions of UME’s scores as part of their Classical Scores
Library online reference database. In many cases, users who also
subscribe to Alexander Street’s Classical Music Library
will be able to browse a score and listen to the track at the
same time. Other Alexander Street publications drawing on the
rich resources of the UME catalog will follow.
Chris Pavlakis said, “When we look back over the last
forty years, I think about how I built the company and there
are so many fantastic memories. It’s a miracle that Alexander
Street Press found us—because the company is such a perfect
fit for ours. It’s a company of quick thinking, fast acting,
creative professionals. I’m happy to be handing our resources
over to them.”
Alexander Street Press, L.L.C., is an academic
