Alexander Street Press today announced an agreement with David Hilliard, the former Black Panther and current Executive Director of the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation, to publish never-before-seen materials from a Black Panther archive that the Foundation privately owns. The items, which include more than 2,500 pages of oral histories and the only known full run of The Black Panther, the party newspaper, will be published electronically in Alexander Street’s Black Thought and Culture database.

The Black Panther Party Newspaper is arguably the most important documentary source for studying the Black Panthers. It provides a weekly record of the development of the party, and it includes contributions from such eminent figures as Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, Stokely Carmichael, Angela Davis, and Huey Newton. For the first time, the newspaper will be available in its entirety, in color and fully searchable. The agreement also includes some 2,500 pages of interviews conducted by David Hilliard and Lewis Cole, in preparation for This Side of Glory: The Autobiography of David Hilliard. Until now, these materials have been restricted.

“We’re very excited to be publishing this content,” said Will Whalen, Editorial Director for Black Thought and Culture. “ These materials will complement the works of Robeson, Baraka, Baldwin, Malcolm X, and Cornell West that are already in the database and will give students perspectives extending from early writers, such as Frederick Douglass, to those writing today.”

Black Thought and Culture is a 100,000-page database of writings by leading African Americans through time. Its goal is to provide students with seminal non-fiction works by blacks in America from Colonial times to the present, thereby documenting the evolution of black thought. Users who already have access to Black Thought and Culture, either by purchase or subscription, will receive the new Black Panther materials automatically.

The Black Panther Party Newspaper collection will be added Black Thought and Culture at its next update, due for fall 2004.
