Alexander Street Press Strikes Agreement with EC Comics

May 29, 2014

More than 10,000 pages to be added to latest volume of online collection

(ALEXANDRIA, VA) – Alexander Street Press has entered into an agreement with EC Comics to add more than 50 key series—a total of 400 issues—from the celebrated publisher into the recently launched online collection Underground and Independent Comics, Comix, and Graphic Novels: Volume II.

“EC’s amazing line of horror, crime, fantasy, and romance titles were perhaps the biggest single influence on the first underground comix artists, and continue to be the source of inspiration and admiration for the independent comics artists of today,” says Greg Urquhart, comics editor at Alexander Street Press. “These works are essential to anyone interested in the form, history, and evolution of comics and comics culture.”

Notable series being added to the recently launched second volume of Alexander Street’s acclaimed comics collection include such titles as Tales from the Crypt, Two-fisted Tales, Weird Science-fantasy, Haunt of Fear, and Crime SuspenStories, featuring early works by such artists as Johnny Craig, Reed Crandall, Jack Davis, Will Elder, George Evans, Frank Frazetta, Graham Ingels, Jack Kamen, Bernard Krigstein, Joe Orlando, John Severin, Al Williamson, Basil Wolverton, and Wally Wood.

Founded in 1944 by Max Gaines and soon thereafter taken over by his son, William Gaines, EC focused on publishing stories and art of unparalleled quality, and soon became one of the largest comics publishers in the United States. As the most notable publisher of horror, crime, and fantasy comics of the time, they came under intense scrutiny by parental and government groups in the 1940s and 1950s, leading to the suspension of their comics lines soon after the establishment of the Comics Code Authority in 1954.

EC Comics issues will be added to the Underground and Independent Comics, Comix, and Graphic Novels collection throughout the coming months. All content will be delivered on Alexander Street Press’s cutting-edge online platform, which provides dozens of powerful features, including:
